Instrument Grade Levels
Beginner/Student
A beginner instrument is generally intended to get a player through their first few years of playing. A good beginner instrument should be structurally sound and durable as it will be in the hands of a novice player who may incorrectly handle or fumble with the instrument while learning. Beginner students are often rented for several reasons including but not limited to:
the student hasn’t committed to an instrument yet
maintenance coverage is included
ability to exchange up sizes if necessary
student is expected to “outgrow” this level
Intermediate/Step-Up
Intermediate instruments are generally more focused on enhanced tone and sometimes include advanced playability features, such as extra keys or levers that a beginner would not make use of. The case is generally more attractive than the hard plastic cases used in student outfits. These instruments are generally played by high school players and some collegiate players. Intermediate instruments are widely perceived to be the best value across both new and used markets and are the most often purchased grade of instrument at Eastside Music.
Professional
Professional instruments spare nothing when it comes to tonal improvement and build quality. They are usually a significant jump in price from an intermediate instrument but are intended to last the life of the player. Many professional instruments also feature aesthetically pleasing adornment such as hand engraving or more attractive wood grain. Eastside stocks few professional instruments in its inventory. This is due to the wide range of customization and optionality of features. Such instruments are often special ordered from the factory.
